It also prevents a legal and valid use-case -- renting out your couch every night of the the year. So long as you still live in the place yourself full-time, this isn't illegal under most municipal codes.

Well "basic law" in many jurisdictions make it illegal to rent your home out for less than x number of days. So if they want to scream what is legal in one case then why not the other case? I wouldn't want anyone to be running what basically is a hotel right next to me.

that doesn’t tell you anything. it’s the short term airbnbs for the entire property that are illegal. you can still rent out a room in a place you live in as far as I know. or do monthly rentals.

Your rental agreement (or HOA regs) almost certainly forbids short term rentals.

more to the point, nearly all residential leases explicitly prohibit subletting already, so regardless of city law, you are violating your lease by renting out an apartment on the short term without the landlord's permission.

Of note: in NYC, it is already illegal according to most leases, and short-term leases are illegal for home-owners unless they reside in the home at the same time.

You think they will allow sub lets?

"It's in violation of the zoning."So is renting your apartment by the day, in many places.

No, that is not generally life, because many cities have laws in place that prevent short term renting. I signed the lease with the understanding that I was not moving into a hotel, because existing laws don't allow it to be used as a hotel.Have you ever researched why laws preventing short term stays in residences were passed? That would be a good start.

if someone owns the property, they should be able to rent their house or condo. Illegal sounds like city is trying to protect other businesses such as established hotels. Define, the rules, so that people can follow them.
