If you don't want legal trouble, don't run exit nodes. I've configured my relay to serve as a middle node. I'm using a provider that's known to be hostile towards Tor relay operators with no repercussions for about two years now.
Arenβt Tor exit nodes mostly blocked already?
Do you run an exit node? If not why?
Exit nodes are the points at which traffic goes from the encrypted TOR network to the clear net, and since many people like to use TOR to do legally questionable things you will likely very quickly be flooded with law enforcement requests, if not just blocked by your provider.
Why are exit nodes more legally perilous than non-exit nodes?
Doesn't that same risk exist if you're running a Tor exit node?
Hosting an exit node is not illegal, but some of the users of that exit node may be doing illegal things.
You're misunderstanding the comment you're replying to. They're not saying you need an exit node to do bad stuff over Tor, they're saying that anybody with the technical ability and knowledge to run a tor exit mode would also choose to use Tor for any bad stuff, and that therefore it seems unlikely anyone who runs a tor exit node would also do bad stuff directly traceable to their own IP.
why is a tor exit node no good?
If you run an exit node, definitely. If not, you should be fine.
