$300 for http://99designs.com/how-it-works. Used them before. Solid work if you don't have a designer on board yet.

As a developer I have used 99designs and was able to find something acceptable. I have however worked with designers of real and rare skill, and they do work that inspires and changes the direction of my development. That's stuff if I could do I would not do for 200 bucks. That's kind of the issue - before 99 designs I had to have no design or use my own abilities to get there. It was awful. Now 99designs has raised the awful to acceptable for merely 200 bucks. From my point of view that'

There are sites like 99designs - for a fixed price you get dozens (or hundreds) of designers working on your project, you pick the best one, and the author gets paid.

It sounds like you'd like to hire a designer, but the size of the project doesn't warrant paying for one. In this case, I'd recommend 99designs.com. Have a simple custom design created for a very reasonable price. Best of both worlds!

Hi HN. This is a project by myself and @seanperkins.This service is aimed at entrepreneurs and developers who may be great at building and sharing their work, but aren't designers. Our ideal customer is someone who is willing to spend money on good design but doesn't want to spend all the time and money working with a traditional agency. The aim is to give this person all the pieces of design they need to build out the rest of their brand. Perfect for someone who can build upon

Hey HackerNews! We created GoDesignerGo after being frustrated by the amount of red tape needed required by design agencies in order to get small jobs done like Facebook cover photos and one-off banner ads.We knew of sites like 99Designs, but we wanted something even simpler and faster. As headache-free as possible. With no hoops to jump through. Turnarounds within 1 business day. Just designs delivered on-time, on-budget, on your schedule. So GoDesignerGo was born! We've already s

I've had some good luck searching for freelancers on elance.com. Look at portfolio's, and if one of them has a style you like and some talent - you can use them as a resource for ideas. I usually have a couple ideas of what I am going for (like the feelings I want to project like "friendly"). I've been able to get some solid designs for $50 bucks. Worst case scenario you don't like it and try something else. I've heard 99 designs is great, but they would cost quite a bit more.

Mostly graphic design work. I pay designers for uncoded website and logo designs, advertising creatives and occasionally small graphics. I used to do the design myself, but I'm not very artistic and a good designer produces better work in far fewer hours, so I'm willing to pay for it. I've run some design contests on 99designs.com and keep in touch with the winning designers for future work, and also met some people through the SitePoint forums.
