Why would anyone want a tablet if a laptop is an option?

sharemywin May 24, 2017 View on HN

just like the tablet replaced the laptop?

What you want is one thing, the software is not there yet, especially for notebook replacement. Unless all you do is edit text files or browse web of course. It is a gimmick, albeit a more useful one - have tablet and phone in 1 device. The thing is, tablets for most folks are not that great thing that everybody though they would be.I don't see many people these days using tablets, most folks went back to phones which can do exactly the same stuff. Tablet is not a laptop. Maybe same for light users.

Personally, the tablet form factor is great for consumption. For example, watching movies or casual web browsing. For me, I don't have much use for a tablet on the creation side but suspect it might be of use for specific requirements, people DJ'ing etc.But my mindset has always been: right tool for the job. Trying to use a tablet as a laptop probably will be very frustrating in short order.

Absolutely true. A tablet isn't as capable as a PC is, yet. Trying to do my taxes on my Nexus 7 would be a nightmare. But it satisfies a very good use case: a cheap, portable device for casual computing and media consumption. The only fundamental thing standing in the way of tablets completely eclipsing PCs is the input method. If we can get a good replacement for the keyboard/mouse on a touchscreen device, the days of traditional PCs could be numbered.

I was talking about tablets. Most people don't need a desktop.

A tablet or phone can't truly replace a desktop/laptop. It was a given.

not if you're looking for a tablet to be a laptop replacement
