NYC subway system has over double the stations of Boston and San Francisco combined. All of which in a densely populated city, and operating 24 hours a day. Doing any work in NYC costs huge amounts of money. Many of the BART and MBTA are in suburban density areas as well, unlike the NYC system that does not enter suburbs or Staten Island.

Then on top of that the city of New York isn't actually in charge fully so (like just happened) if they try to do something disruptive but critical the governor can come and derail the whole plan. I don't mean to say it excuses the mismanagement but it does

I'll take the New York Subway system any day over what Boston has (MBTA).

NYC is a very rich city. NYC can definitely afford a better subway.People come to the voting stations and pick the candidate with the most important agenda for them. Obviously, the NYC subway does not seem to be the largest issue. If you want to blame rich people for that, well, welcome to the USSR.
