Teslas get regular OTA updates. They sometimes fail, but they've been remotely patching their vehicles for years.

Most cars don’t have OTA. If there’s a bug that causes death, they issue a recall and firmware is updated through the OBD.Sure, it’s an expensive process, but maybe it would persuade Tesla to invest more into their quality control.

If the car takes over-the-air software updates, they are advertising up front that they don't believe themselves able to debug the car before they sell it to you. Normal ECU's, ABS brakes etc. do not need OTA updates. There is no absolute certainty about anything, but such issues are rare enough to be handled with product recalls.

Pretty sure Tesla signs their OTA updates.

The car notifies you if an update is available, when you can postpone it, and IIRC you also receive a notification on your phone before it starts at which point you can also postpone it. Also, it tells you the estimated duration of the update in minutes and specifically notes that you will likely not be able to use the car during this time. Also, braking and steering should be dependent on software. This is the case in most modern cars, though those don't always have OTA updates. It means

It's seems that it's only not a recall when Tesla does it, because Tesla invented software updates.
