I always use self-checkout. It's faster (multiple servers, single queue), and works very well for me. Yes, you may need to learn some stores' quirks, but that's the same as with any user interface

Self-checkout is convenient until several people with full sized carts try to use it and don’t know how to scan things. They’ll occupy the station for several times as long as someone with a small basket. Not sure why they insist on coming through self-checkout. It takes them longer than going through the regular checkout. The self-checkout lane is labeled as 15 items but no one pays attention, even the attendant.

Regular grocery stores have really gone downhill as well. Whenever I shop, there’s at most 1 cashier doing checkout and usually 0 (only self-checkout being open). I consider myself pretty proficient about knowing what sets off the machine but still set it off 60% of the time (about some weight imbalance etc) that requires an attendant to come fix manually. I’ve gotten to dread the grocery store trips as they require so much overhead time. I really wish the “just walk out” could’ve been populariz

I'm quite often waiting in line for self checkout. In theory people with only a few items go through, in practice people will sometimes go crazy with it. And of course some customers can be quite slow or get hung up so it isn't really predictable.Drives me nuts to wait to take care of myself. I think they should give you a scanner gun you walk around the store with, then I can just leave.

Can you describe why there's a big push for self checkout? I suspect there's a bigggg difference between countries, so this all sounds very alien. In my experience at Tescos (outside the UK) checkout has been great. They tend to have a zillion aisles operating, with the cashier picking up and scanning every single item directly from your cart. At the exit there's always a 'check' but it's pretty farcical. Somebody glances at your cart, glances at the receipt, and

Why wait? Just use the self checkout and get on your way...

I’ve see this story floating around and it certainly doesn’t apply to my area. The self checkout at my local grocery store is very popular. When you’ve done it once or twice and get the hang of it it’s easy to go fast even with items like fruits/vegetables where you have to enter a code and weigh for the price. When I’m buying alcohol that requires age verification I make eye contact with the cashier covering the self checkout stations when I walk up, they are already on their way over whe

I can recall people saying similar things about grocery store checkouts. Lines were quicker if you went through the self-checkout, but people still stood around to have a person do the work and socialize. At some point in the last last few years that seems to have completely flipped, there are rarely people going through the human lines with the bulk doing self-checkout.

The stores I visit usually have 10+ self checkouts. It swallows a lot more people so you don't have to queue like in a regular store. It also allows people with fewer items to bypass the people with a full shopping cart because there are 9 other checkouts. You also save time by putting the scanned items directly into your bag instead of putting them on a band for the cashier to scan, before you can put them into your bag.So my experience is that it's faster most of the time.

I've stopped using self-checkout because I always run into troubles. In one store when I accidentally double-scan an item, I have to press the button to call someone, and it takes 5 minutes for someone to show up.In another store you need to place your groceries onto a weighing shelf, and somehow I couldn't figure out what to do to make the machine happy. For produce and pastries that don't have a bar code you have to navigate through a stupid hierarchical menu and I just cou
