Trying to confront chase the perp was indeed a dumb idea. Though if you read the article they appear to have made multiple reports in the past. Thing is with police reports like this is by the time they arrive they only "see" vandalism which is all they can put in their report. Anything else you tell them is taken with a grain of salt, they arent psychics. I'm going to go out on a limb here and hypothesize that the local police force doesn't investigate many felonies, regardless of who reports them. Just a theory. :)

Someone I know wanted to take apart an old car I had for a project to take parts he needed. When I declined he came back when nobody was home and tried to cut the parts out in a hurry, damaging a lot of the engine and smashing both headlights for fun. Isn't that incredible. It's almost "We can't go with you to that place and investigate a crime because a crime might happen!"I'm not from the US and I've only ever had positive interactions with police, but cases like this which would be low effort for them and have a useful impact on petty crime in their region, seem very frustrating.
