ASICs in Crypto Mining

Discussions center on how Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are now primarily mined using specialized ASICs rather than GPUs or CPUs, which are no longer competitive or profitable. Comments also touch on ASIC-resistant algorithms in coins like Ethereum that favor GPU mining.

This would probably not work since bitcoin miners are all ASICs these days.

Bitcoin is mined with ASICs, not GPUs

andy81 May 15, 2022 View on HN

Bitcoin mining is almost entirely ASICs. GPUs aren't much good at the algorithm used.

That hasn't been mined with GPUs for years. It's all ASICs now.

ethereum was especialy designed to be mined with gpu, i think asic or fpga will miss the memory size that gpu have.

Bitcoin mining uses purpose built ASICs now. Maybe start there?

nwh Feb 28, 2013 View on HN

Not FPGA, but ASIC. Mining with a GPU is fairly useless now unless you've a warehouse of them and free power.

cryptocurrency mining is mostly done using ASICs

abrookewood Jan 7, 2025 View on HN

Probably not on GPUs - think it all moved to ASICs years ago.

astrodust Jan 19, 2024 View on HN

Less, but you'd need the right ASICs. GPU can't keep up with those.
