The cluster debates the true costs of self-hosting infrastructure or building in-house solutions versus using managed cloud or SaaS services, emphasizing that developer, ops, and maintenance time often exceed subscription fees.

Does setting up and maintaining that cost more than $17/month in developer time?

Dev time would far outweigh the cost of a managed equivalent.

It’s expensive. Even considering dev and ops hours.

You answered your own question. IT staff is expensive, a SaaS subscription less-so.

This sounds like classic engineer(s) talk; totally ignoring the human cost of setup, maint and ongoing development which is usually handled by an (expensive) ops team. It's not $5k vs $2k, it's $5k vs $2k + ops time.

Compared to the cost of extra developer time, this seems like a reasonable cost solution.

This assumes that develop / ops team is no cost and that your uptime would be higher (it wouldn't)

Might not be so obvious when summing all the cost (apex, opex). Not mentioning the difficulty to find experienced people to maintain it. Unless you are really big of course

Thank you!At work, people keep complaining about our costs and coming up with spreadsheets showing how much money we would save with our own hardware. They never add the engineering costs. When they do, they forget to include the ongoing maintenance. Or the new SMEs that need to be hired (and on call). Or even the opportunity cost of doing a multi-year migration to arrive at the exact spot they already are today. All that money, and noone is looking into optimizing our systems to shrink t

Surely the cost of the subs is trivial compared to the cost of training users etc?
