The cluster centers on debates about whether 'Linux' refers solely to the kernel or the complete operating system (GNU/Linux), including Richard Stallman's advocacy for proper attribution to the GNU project and distinctions from systems like Android.

Not same. People who call GNU/Linux knows atleast linux is just kernel.

"Oh you're not actually using Linux, that's GNU/Linux"

And it's not Linux, it's GNU/Linux!

So... it's Linux but not GNU/Linux?

chatman Sep 7, 2013 View on HN

"GNU/Linux" is the OS, "Linux" is just the kernel. The GNU project is responsible for many of the crucial parts responsible for making a complete OS, save for the kernel. Abbreviating the OS with "Linux", for the sake of convenience, should be avoided in order to give the GNU project its due credit.

Linux is NOT an operating system, its a kernel. GNU/LINUX is, however.

GNU is not either the operation system as without Hurd, Linux or some other kernel you can not use the GNU tools. GNU/Linux is a collection of software which forms the operation system though this collection can contain even more software and with different collection it becomes different operation system which is why Android is Android and Ubuntu is Ubuntu, etc. But Linux will always be the key component of operation systems using Linux as kernel and we Linux fan boys will always be happy when

Usually when people talk about Linux, they don't mean the kernel. They mean the kernel and GNU, so Android does not count.

Linux is just an implementation detail; it's a more accurate description to call it a GNU/Linux system, yes, but most Linux distros could drop in one of the BSDs or illumos as their base layer and from a user perspective nothing would change.

Linux is a class of operating systems which use the Linux kernel. Referring to Linux as an OS, is a perfectly fine thing to generically mean 'an OS which uses Linux as a kernel' and has an agreed common meaning.Almost no Operating System is precisely GNU/Linux - most have vim, an X server, GNOME or KDE, 7zip etc. And the argument that GNU is a more principal argument is incorrect.
