It's probably better for more people to not get a real pet.
Not everyone can take care of a dog or wants to.You even admit it ("inconveniences") yet immediately dismiss it.
I think that might be a special situation as people are super sensitive about their dogs.

Apologies for the implication. I'm not a pet owner myself and chose the analogy based on what I've heard other people say (possibly as a justification for putting down their pets).
