Possibly https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020–2022_global_chip_shortage, but could be anything, including high demand.
Would Nvidia's shortages also fall in this bucket?
Very few people need any more. There's also chip shortages of various durations.
This was expected and its been a supply issue for a while, also they had to do this last year as well.
Reminds me of semiconductor "shortage" where companies simply saw rising profits and decided this limited supply is the way forward. For example try buying any cheap small FPGA from mayor players. Xilinx (sorry, AMD) simply says Spartan 6 is not officially EOL, we just wont make them anymore in volume so forget $4 chips its $40 now :)
During COVID, with chip shortages, everything downstream bought as many chips as they could get. Now they have stockpiles to work through.

Chip shortage probably. It's affecting a lot of products, not just high end video cards.
I am wondering if it has to do with chip shortages and supply chain issues, due to that I can imagine that the current offering became unsustainable.
Could this have been the reason for chip shortage?
