Interesting! Why FreeBSD over Linux out of curiosity?
I run my web servers using FreeBSD on Digital Ocean. Not to get into a whole thing about it, but Linux just refers to the kernel; various groups package the kernel with user-land stuff to create distributions: Ubuntu, Debian, Arch, etc.FreeBSD is a unified operating system thatβs developed, tested and released as a unit; they take responsibility for the entire stack and architectures: amd64, i386, powerpc, powerpc64, sparc64, armv6, and aarch64.In general, FreeBSD (and to my knowledge, t
What is it that makes FreeBSD more viable than linux?
It does not have drivers support as good as Linux. Though I found that most peripherals work as intended. The desktop/windows managers are the same as in Linux world - Gnome, KDE, Xfce and Lxde. Most softwares which work on linux will work on FreeBSD too like Python, Ruby, Java. On top of that, FreeBSD has Linux binary compatibility. So, technically, you can run anything that runs on Linux. But, I found that google tools or gigantic packages like eclipse do not work on FreeBSD (or I don't know h
what's the advantage for running FreeBSD over linux for your application?
I am a OpenBSD / Windows user (all the VMs server I am running are OpenBSD). I haven't used FreeBSD a whole lot.1) You get an operating system. One of the problems with Linux is the number of distros. If you want to know how to do something you've got to google around and look for a guide. In the BSDs it is just reading the man pages and figuring things out from there.2) I've found with OpenBSD things either are documented and work or they don't work at all. The sy
What about freebsd makes it a better choice as compared to Linux based systems?
FreeBSD is my go-to OS when I need a VM. I have poor sysadmin skills and I find it easier than Linux in general. I still use Xubuntu for my laptop, and Windows for my desktop. For me, as a low level power user, I just find that searching "how to do something in FreeBSD" feels like always leads me to something easy to follow through and consistent. In Linux many times I find that tutorials don't apply to my version, or this distro has this files somewhere else and a long list of
Disclaimer: No disrespect meant towards FreeBSD or the maintainers.I currently work on FreeBSD servers pretty much exclusively for my job and I have a really hard time grokking why I would want to use them over some flavor of Linux. I also work (and have worked in my career) with Linux servers (Ubuntu and Debian primarily, and things like alpine in docker) and there isn't anything I do that I think "I wish I was on FreeBSD", the opposite is not true, I semi-regularly pine for X
