I'm on the same boat. I even posted a similar Ask-HN a couple of months ago.My understanding is I don't know what I want to do. I drift by and try to grab at whatever that keeps me floating for a while, and then drift away when it is no longer interesting.I kinda gave up fixing this and believe it has a lot to do with gene or luck. Some people (think Carmack) just know what they want to do for LIFE so they start early, have laser focus amd achieve great things. They are born to d

I'd say:- Start with the first one, but in the context of the second one.- Think about what you care about. "Stuff that makes me mad every day" might not be a bad way to at least kick-start your thinking. Your first answer to that will probably be something pretty general like "bigotry" or "ignorance" or "bad design", so you might have to ask some more questions to narrow it down: what, of that, affects the people you care about? What makes your

In any times and any circumstances the only sustainable answer to your question is: whatever you feel you truly like, has value (to you personally) and has meaning. Not for commercial rewards, but in itself.Assuming you have several interests like most people - choose the one to start from based on your intuition. It’s as simple as that. It’s dangerous to follow any more specific advice from anyone, they will never be in your shoes and nobody in this universe can predict the future. But

I wrote in the previous thread that this one stemmed from but here is the nutshell:- Its impossible to know what we want at a young age, literally only 1% probably does one thing their entire life cause they are obsessed with it.- The secret to life IMO is experimentation and exploration. As silicon valley as it sounds, we are shit at predicting what we want because of external influences and us being products of our surroundings. We only start making action when we get to the extreme poin

Figure out what you really enjoy doing in life (even if it is nothing at all), and do more of that instead :)

Old guy here.I don't think you'll find the answers to the questions you're asking. Or, if you're like me, you will find answers. but they might change with each new chapter of your life.At the risk of sound like a broken HN record, I urge you to check out Derek Sivers' FAQ at https://sivers.org/faqI am also finally reading through Cal Newport's immensely popular So Good They C

I've had pretty similar path (minus the long exotic trip). I've also pursued personal projects and interests very seriously, only to find out that I don't know why I'm doing them really. I found that I'm most satisfied with hedonic/epicurean lifystyle: hanging out with friends, spending time outside, cooking, reading, playing some of my favorite games. Even a job is not that bad, given how easy we can have it in the software profession. I guess any interests and amb

To me, regardless of what you call it, it comes down to two things: 1. finding something you enjoy/willingly put great effort into, 2. looking back on your life at the end and not regretting the time spent.I can't say I know I've found mine but I have from a young age enjoyed understanding and making machinery, now extended to software. I try to improve and apply my ability at a company that doesn't suck and share anything useful I've learned. I still greatly enjoy le

The way I see it, don’t get bored. Do things so you’re not bored. Having purpose helps tremendously, as well as being loved / part of a group and creating value for people / a group. You’ll probably change intensities of focus on various things throughout life, I think we all do so don’t think there will just be one path and that’s it.Anyway, yea, anything impactful usually takes time. I don’t know people who conquered the world overnight. Maybe you tried startups / big ideas
