It’s possible it’s not a problem, I’d be inclined to give yourself a break. A lot of the “essentials” we’re supposed to splurge on (big house, cars, expensive food, etc) are often overrated when you look at it from a “does this make my life better” lens.Investing in yourself - be that skills or life experiences - is worthwhile but you can do even that with a frugal slant.
Well, personally, I'm in a situation where I struggle to spend more than half of what I earn, including my mortgage repayment.I'm not a cheap person, if I need to spend money on something, I will. It's just that my life style and affinities mean I'm not spending much.I'm not much of a fashion guy, so no huge collection of expensive clothes.Nor am I a car guy (I don't even currently own one, and if I were to have one again in the future, it would simply be a
For a very long time I was saving a lot, even over 50% of every paycheck. I was renting a room, even if I could easily rent whole flat. I was spending my money mostly on food, clothes and sometimes I bought electronic gadgets. I didn't even had a driving licence, cause I thought owning the car is an unnecessary expense. Now I own used BMW, so I spend a piece of money on fuel and casual fixes. I also spend greater amount of money on branded clothes. I buy a lot of books, which I am current
Mostly it's: save money by paying more for more stuff
Lots of things people do for entertainment cost money that they would be better off saving. Why pick on this one thing? A lot of people blow their money shopping or travelling or on luxury goods. They may be affected negatively by these pursuits. It’s not my business. All I ask is that these folks don’t come for my money when they run out of theirs.
It seems that everything is a tax to you. What would you like to spend your money on besides lifestyle?
I have spent my whole life mostly buying nothing and I realized recently that I am probably pretty far from optimal on that tradeoff. Outside of food, rent, and travel I've been spending around 5k/year my entire life (mostly laptops and phones)Recently I realized I'd probably get old with money better spent while I'm young, so I started spending a lot more. It's felt great overall, for example I bought a sleep tracker, new bedding (had been using the same pillows for
It's really a spirit, way of life, most people are consumerists sadly, if they own money, they 'need' to spend itOn my side, I rarely think about money, I just buy what I need, that's not much (about 100€/month in total for everything)
In my 20s and early 30s I was very frugal. I had a relatively low income as a civil servant, was paying down student debt and spent any spare cash on backpacking. Fast-forward 15 years and I lucked into a high income about 10 years ago, am married and have two kids. We still enjoy spending on travel but we live in a high COL area, have a big mortgage, a couple of nice cars and buy too much non-essential stuff online. We do also try to give a good amount to causes we believe in and save well for
This is a little condescending. I live frugally but have spent the money I've saved on a house for my family to live in. I've contracted the last year to be able to afford to travel around the world next month."You can enjoy your life right now. You just need to spend less money on shit that you don’t need."True, I don't need a house or to go travelling but my life would be poorer had I not invested in that shit.
