To be fair, the parent was not comparing those governments from a democracy standpoint, but was comparing their actions. Surely the Chinese government is currently more oppressive to its own population than the USG is, but it is also doubtlessly less oppressive to foreign populations, which may suggests that they differ in circumstances more than in essence and maybe why the parent equated them?

USA Government doesn't do terrible things to USA citizens, but does terrible things to Non-USA countries and its citizens (most of the rest of the world).Chinese Government does terrible things to its own people, but doesn't do terrible things to the rest of the world.Pick your poison.

Tight media bubble? Hmm.If I made an equivalent comment similar to coldtea's, one detailing a list of China's sins, on Chinese social media... place your bets on whether or not this post would be removed by the government censors. I bet it would, personally. Probably rather quickly. Some of the "counterpoints" also were strange considering we are talking about China. For instance, China executes more people than anyone else in the world, and even when adjusted at a per c

I understand what you're saying, though it's still whataboutism that tries to compare apples to pears. The USA essentially still cares about your privacy and individual rights. China doesn't. In the USA, where there are infractions on privacy (and sadly there are some), it can be openly criticised, discussed and possibly changed democratically. In China that's simply not the case.

When China does it, it's authoritarian. But when the USA does it, it is to protect our freedoms. It's totally different! /s

Another viewpoint is the US is doing to its citizens what China has been doing to its citizens since forever.I don't see that as a good development!

Sorry I got under your skin! You should take a look at the state of civil liberties at home btw. Fixating on China's sins and ignoring the US' is kinda weird.

But US does it for FREEDOM. China does it for oppression. Surely you can see the truth in this?

It is just to point the hypocrisies of the discussion tone in HN towards China when USA most times does just the same thingAs an example is Uighur camps in China. When USA is the country with most incarcerated in the world in absolute terms, even China with a fraction of the population! And mostly directed at black and poor communities

It's absurd to compare the US to China because:1: It's not the topic2: it's a blatant falacy3: it distracts from the main point adding unneeded emotionalismand 4: Even with it's current slide toward Eastern European style strongman state, it's not remotely as bad to it's people.
