It's more like comparing economy class with business class.
Business class is the way, it would be much cheaper if first-class didn't exist since I genuinely never felt so out of place when being there. But I guess the amount of money you can get from first-class customers surpasses the amount you can get from business class customers.
If you fly business class you get waited on hand and foot the whole time, get plenty of space to lie down and sleep, and a reasonably quiet environment. On the next step up (ie not spending millions and millions of dollars on your own plane), you’ll be on a much smaller (probably noisier) plane with fewer comforts (you’ll likely be back to sitting instead of lying down), worse food, fewer supplies of things you might want to ask for (that you didn’t specifically request in advance of the flight)
That's basically business class :)
Customers for economy class seats are very price sensitive - if you were enjoying the experience then the airline wouldn't be cutting the services offered close enough to the bone to offer a competitive price. You can pay for a slightly better experience, but it's very expensive!
I'd be all over that. I recently flew a short Virgin America flight where I only had to pay $190 instead of $140 to get a first class seat. Frankly, I'd pay double for every flight I'm on to get even half that much comfort. The seats were massive, the legroom insane (could not touch the seat in front of me with my feet if I tried), full recliner, etc. You'd think there would be a logical in-between, but in a world where 20% more space in business class costs you 5x as much,
Why not a 1st-class airplane seat?
Sometimes you can get a business class by a nice price (something like 1.5x a regular ticket), it dependsAnd it's not only about the space, it's the service + luggage allowance + flexibility
Are you paying for business class to chat with flight attendants?
Why is buying first class tickets bad?
