it's not like android has been a paragon of os security
Android is already known to be less secure than iOS, how much worse will it get now?
Why not? Android security is actually top notch.
Neither are equivalent to this. In general, the Android ecosystem is far less secure.
Is there a reputation of a security difference between Android and iOS? And in what direction does the badness lean?
Is there real non marketing evidence that android is less secure?
Android can't be secured unless it's stock with verified boot/ root of trust. Even then, the verified apps from the store leak your data at every opportunity, as does the OS. iPhone is the way to go
As a side note: given all the security resources Google has, why Android is still not considered safer than iOS? What mistakes has Google made with Android, and how could they be fixed?
GNU/Linux don't even have a notion of security let alone having anything comparable to even backdoored android/ios.I think your best bet would be a Pixel phone with GrapheneOS, though I'm not sure whether it was effected here.
Android (Pixels specifically, so not a derivative of Android) does this and platform is just as secure
