You're not restricted to AMD, but Nvidia Linux drivers are notoriously bad.
Nvidia on Linux is massive hassle, between poorly working nouveau and nvidia annoying blob driver. AMD should work just fine.
Your info looks a decade old. AMD driver on Linux are better that NVIDIA. They simply just work out of the box.
I've only even ran Nvidia on Linux, is the AMD driver really worse?
I have had exactly the opposite experience, issues with Nvidia cards / drivers that I couldn't fix. Over the last 5~10 years AMD support on Linux (and other open source OSes) have been much better. To the point that for some of my workloads AMD on Linux is faster than AMD on Windows.
On Linux in my experience, Nvidia drivers are crap and have always been crap. AMD have gone from much crappier to almost OK.
Yeah, nvidia linux support is meh, but still much better than amd.
For this particular use case, Nvidia works better on Linux than AMD
AMD all the way. Avoid Nvidia on Linux.
Recent amd drivers have been really good on both Linux and Windows - give them a try sometime.
