Own vs Foreign Surveillance Fears
The cluster centers on debates about whether individuals, especially US citizens, should fear surveillance and data access by their own government (e.g., NSA) more than by foreign governments like China (e.g., CCP), with many arguing domestic spying poses greater risks due to direct power over citizens.

No, but at least US is not likely to leak some random personal info to non-allied government, e.g. China in this case, on purpose. It is neither legal nor preferable for the U.S. government to do so, I guess. And it might also be probable for an U.S. citizen to feel safer under the surveillance of an opponent of U.S., if not by the U.S. simultaneously.
I have always found this fear over "foreign states" to be a bit odd. Sure if you are a International Company, or a US Government Contractor it might be a concern but for me a Natural Born US Citizen that rarely if ever travels abroad and never to the nations of China or Russia I have limited reasons to fear those nation states, sure they could steal my ID and cause me some momentary financial harm but the US government is empowered to put me in a cage, physically harm me or even kill
Realize that it's probably just not the US government that has this type of access.
I'd be discussing on HN if a shadowy entity suddenly put a backdoor on a service I run to watch my customers' actions within the app.And I'm still very much annoyed that, as a foreigner who happens to have American customers and business partners, I'm told I have no reason to worry if the USG is watching my work, my personal activities and my relationships. I'd be just as annoyed if another entity was doing the spying and the posterior use of the information to punish
I don't understand this comment because American/European governments (where I would guess most HN commenters are from) are almost certainly doing the same thing according to what we've learned about for example the NSA. Maybe you trust your own government more.
This is the answer to folks in the US saying: "I am not worried about a foreign govt. having my data"
I don't trust my (US) government not to spy on me. But I don't trust the Chinese or Russian government not to spy on me, either. I'm not sure that they have my interest at heart any more than my own government does, and maybe less.
If you're a US citizen, it's far safer for the CCP to be spying on you than the US government.
Eh better be spied by the goverment in the other side of the world than in yours.
Not really an option; when the government wants something they’re basically your enemy. Who cares if China knows everything about me, they can’t get to me, whereas the USA government just has to issue some legal threat and I can’t stop it. China isn’t my enemy and can’t do shit to me. The USA gov might be someday.
