No, they didn't. Facebook was just a less trashy, more exclusive version of myspace when it came out. Geocities, livejournal, blogger etc. were earlier iterations on the same concept - personal websites for non-techies. The only thing new about Facebook was their relative success in signing up a broader userbase, which was probably just a right-place, right-time thing of being around when computers and high-speed internet were becoming cheap and ubiquitous rather than anything different abo
Facebook was just an iteration over other social networks. If FB didn't exist today, things would be a tad different - we'd be using MySpace to connect, Flickr to share photos, and AIM to chat. It's not like they introduced the internet, or a cure to cancer.
Ironically that's what Facebook initially was.

By that logic, Facebook shouldn't have been possible. MySpace (etc.) were popular at the time, and a start up (Facebook) ate their lunch.
Orkut and MySpace were both a lot larger than when Facebook started. Facebook did some great things and innovated during their early years. But yeah, nowadays they can just coast by being marginally better than any new product.
When most people started to discover the internet, early 00s, facebook wasn't as it is now. It appeared less malign, wasn't able to track as much, and just less creepy.It grew into what it is, slowly.
