A single case doesn't invalidate the statistics of a larger group. You being top 1% should know that.

It seems dubious to apply this kind of population statistics to individuals at all.
I'd suggest it's because 'us' is a very small, and not exactly unbiased, sample of 'anyone'.
At a population scale that's not as true as one would think.
Attributing characterstics to popultions of hundreds of millions based on anecdotal data from a handful cannot be accurate, just perpetuates stereotypes and doesn't help.
