Welcome to policing in the US, seems worse then that now occurs :(
I think your views on police are mostly appicable in the U.S. because the U.S. has (one of) the most militarized police force(s) in the Western world.Your views do not match my experience in the Netherlands at all. My largest irritation regarding Dutch police is that they seem incapable of helping with bike thefts (even though all bikes have a mandatory unique ID), and sometimes they give you a ticket for carefully biking over pedestrian ways (excellent shortcuts) or for biking without a ligh
Surely you realize that this is cultural. In my country there is very little crime, and the police very much only exist to serve the population and they are always trying to help.Common sense here is that it would be foolish to think that the police are not trying to help, and I am very glad that the US's relation with the police is not an entirely global problem.
This seems to be an American thing - many Europeans really trust the police. Certainly in the UK I expect police to be helpful, polite, and fair; from everything I've read, that doesn't sound like the case in the US
Why would you say it's 'unamerican'? Your police force does similar things in almost every state don't they?
This post and the article have the same problem: Thinking the way police works/seems to work in the US (always out to get you) is universal to the world while it is the exception. Police in other countries usually works out of a desire to help.
Maybe the US is world american-style police? :D
You wouldn't see police acting like that in, say, Germany. So it's not just the structural situation that you describe because that obtains in any country. You would see a scene like that in, say, America, or the Philippines, or many "non-Western" countries.
Not to mention the police attitude to people. Its like nazi Germany in the United States. Police can do anything and get away with it. Im watching the police in the US and comparing to Europe, and I cant believe the amount of sadistical violence that is going on there. Maybe because ex military people become cops? Its a very scary place. I dont even go there as a tourist because they have a legal right to throw anyone in jail without trial if they want to.That being said, ordinary people ar
United States is a police state. I said it 20 years ago, people laughed. Now you see if for yourself. American police have positioned themselves as the enemy of the people because they see people as their enemy. And the only way to stop the enemy is by applying brute force. If they're doing all this in front of cameras, imagine what they do when nobody is looking.Whereas in other countries, such as the UK, police are considered civilians in a uniform and behave accordingly.
