Subtitles vs Dubbing

Solution: use foreign language subtitles (since the goal is translation and not helping with hearing impaired people, those effects aren't usually included).

As a native speaker I needed subtitles.

Skimmed the article, so am not sure if it mentions this, but I often use subtitles due to the incredibly bad audio mixing that seems to have been a trend in surprising amount of new releases over the past few years.I am not a native English speaker, but do have near perfect levels in TOEFL tests so it aint that.

I'd rather just watch content with proper subtitles in the language I'm trying to learn. Say I'm learning German, I could either watch some original movie in German with English subtitles, or watch an English movie with German subtitles. This problem seems already solved.

I bet they don’t show subtitles when the film is in your native language.

I much prefer subtitles to dubbing. Which is annoying because a very large percentage of Netflix content now is foreign language with bad dubbing instead of subtitles. There are some shows that look interesting and I’d watch but I just can’t get past the dubbing. It would be great if they could add some kind of option to use the original track and subtitles.

I've found this for German and French too. If I watch a movie or tv show that I already know and turn on both the German language track and the subtitles, it's awful - they're almost never even close.I would assume it's better for English because so much is produced in English, so there aren't two different teams on audio and text. I would try to find more German language stuff, but due to a lot of media region restrictions, it's insanely difficult to get foreign

It would be great to crowd-source data on whether Netflix's audio track matches the subtitles for a particular film. Even when the original audio language and subtitle language match, the subtitles often paraphrase the spoken dialogue, making it difficult to follow along.

why? do languages now need subtitles?

I like to watch it with the subtitltes and dubbing. The dubbing is usually so dumbed down as to make it a completely different show.
