I’m guessing you don’t know much about religion?Christianity and islam are quite a bit different, the latter literally convinving people to convert by sword. And here I thought HN got rid of bigoted comments like this.
"A religion is not just a set of texts but the living beliefs and practices of its adherents. Islam today includes a substantial minority of believers who countenance, if they don’t actually carry out, a degree of violence in the application of their convictions that is currently unique."http://www.newyorker.com/news/news-desk/blame-for-charlie-he...
If you are trying to imply that the issue is precipitated by Islam, it’s important to note the beliefs and attitudes that you are mentioning are not endemic to Islam.
First of all, this is a "no true Scotsman" fallacy. Islam, after Christianity, has the bloodiest history we know. The only reason it is the second biggest religion is because it expanded by violent conquers. Even in the off chance that the host is being decent, they imposed so much regulations on non-Muslims that they would end up converting. So this is exactly what Islam is.>> Let me put it this way. There are only a couple of hundred thousand/million of people who follo
I’m not a fan of Islam myself but if I had to find reasons in its favor I would say it’s extremely unifying, offers contentment through absolute submission and fosters a martial sense in its adherents I find missing in a lot of religions. Additionally I feel like it is the religion that would be the most accepting of a scientific interpretation of the world if it can get past the modern Wahhabism that’s being spewed. The western world has also historically demonized people all over the world t
The thing that makes the claim regarding vegetarianism wrong but correct with regards to islam is that the foundational book of islam portraits a mass murderer as an idol. Furthermore it proclaims totalitarian authority in some political matters. Ever heard of sharia courts? That sets islam apart from vegetarianism, which we also expect a 11 year old to understand. In fact, I also see similiar dangerous tendencies in christianity. However, these days it leads to comparatively few problems wh
It is in fact exactly what the commenter said: “a specific religion”, “holding Islam to the standard of modernity”, rejecting half of the Quran as trash, etc. are blanket references to an entire major world religion.I cannot say whether it was due to bigotry or gross ignorance but neither is helpful to anyone other than groups like ISIS or their fortunately less-successful Christian fundamentalist counterparts who are trying to spin this as a war between religions.
The post that I was replying to in the first place said "blasphemy is indeed punishable by death in Islam," full stop. All I'm trying to do is make it clear that no major religion is a unified monolith. We both know that the crimes of terrorists and fundamentalists are used to condemn peaceful Muslims in the US and Europe.
They both think, like Christianity, that their religion is the only path to god. Islam kills for it too.
> Any religion that fundamentally doesn't tolerate the existence of other religions and calls its followers to slaughter those who don't convert is "bad religion". Islam is a "bad religion".You don't seem to know much about Islam. Let me leave this here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JizyaYou can argue that it is discrimination, but if you consider
