Some people argue there's this thing called "bullshit jobs" [0] making up a substantial part of the modern job economies.[0] https://www.strike.coop/bullshit-jobs/

There are plenty of jobs that don't need to exist at all. No amount of discipline and focus will turn a bullshit job[1] into one that contributes something meaningful. Perhaps we need to normalize working less so the burden/gift of "real" jobs can be split more evenly.[1] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bullshit_Jobs

You've basically summarized David Graeber's book - Bullshit Jobs[1]. Highly recommended.[1] https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Bullshit-Jobs/David-G...

We then perhaps should talk about bullshit jobs, because it seems to me that a good chunk of the population (and a good chunk of our industry) is working on things of dubious usefulness to the society at large. The most charitable way of viewing this I can come up with is that bullshit jobs are really burning human labor to keep the economic engine from stalling. We ought to be able to do better.

David Graeber describes this "fluff work" as "bullshit jobs", a sense of purpose in a job seems to be increasingly rare for many people. https://www.theguardian.com/books/2018/may/25/bullshit-jobs-...
