I feel like you are missing the fact that it is ~$100 for 4 meals, not one meal.

$12 per meal is "absurdly expensive"? I think it's comparable to eating out.

Going to guess SF, where those are not overly expensive prices for eating out with a drink at each meal.

Actually $5/meal is on the high side, you can eat healthily for significantly less than that. You just have to drop the bad expectation of eating elaborately cooked meals all the time. A cheese sandwich for example costs perhaps a few tens of cents at most.

I spend ~1.5USD per meal (for two people). We don't all live in first world economies with high-paying jobs.

I, too, buy good quality takeout food about $30-60/daily. Please stop shaming. Not everyone likes to cook food.

I spend maybe 40€ per week on food, not just lunch. 20 pounds for a single meal seems a bit expensive to me.

"The meals are worth $15,000."Simple response: "They're not worth that much to me, I'm afraid."

I spend $300-$400 on lunch alone per month (flatiron nyc)

Cheap? That must be for food only :P
