Didn't Amazon warehouse replaced walking with robots?

harmarsupercar Jun 2, 2015 View on HN

Yes, it does seem like they're using a robot to solve a human problem. If the robots were the ones who decided how the shelves were initially stacked then surely there would be more elegant approaches to this? picking and packing is a tiny part of the whole ordering and delivery system which would probably be best re-designed from the top down if all parts are to be conducted automatically. That said, I'm all for businesses encouraging research to be done in this area. Automation wil

Sorry autocorrect. i meant warehouse. Have you seen these? https://youtu.be/ZWonAz7Kczs?si=a0yF-YRRmXYsYj-QThey are not the robots I assume you’re referring to that move the crates of orders around that roll on the ground.

You should check out Ocado - they have literally done thishttps://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/business-38897417/the-ocado-wa...

Doesn't Amazon want them more for their warehouse automation bots? Like the little things that carry around the pallets?

the_imp Nov 7, 2010 View on HN

Yes. Their warehouses use a Kiva Systems setup, i.e. they have hundreds of little orange robots that run around and lift & carry shelves. Though an ad, this gives a rather good idea: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6zXOW6v0c8s

Hasn't amazon been the one to only slowly adopt warehouse automation because it is cheaper to hire humans at $10 an hour? They did buy this company that makes little robots to move shelves around but it is nothing compared to a real system like this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DeT-Hj2DXk

THe Kiva video is not state-of-the-art I think. Check out this automated grocery warehouse, something right out of Factorio:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4DKrcpa8Z_EHumans would just get in the way and get mangled.

It looks like the warehouse needs to be redesigned not just the robots inside it. Warehouse lighting is likely unnecessary, heat can be reduced, sensors everywhere... its now a machine environment. The floor markers, etc should all be part of that environment. Build the environment to the automated worker and you'll get a more effective result. I think Amazon has gone this route already.

> It's outside of our imagination to assume there are different stationsNo but my naivety thought there would be more automation in place to reduce walking, sorting and picking up heavy things.Granted I have not worked in a fulfilment center and my impressions are solely based on amazon's own material but they put out jobs for operatives that just stand there all day sorting small packets, moving from this to sorting incoming large pallets sounds like it would do more damage!<
