This is one opinion.I always see people criticizing all sort of tests because they are not good regarding to some criteria. Well, this is true for all of them. Those tests are trying to divide billions of people into few categories, you lose information anyway. There are 8 billions of personalities that should be split into 16 categories, some people will match exactly, other will lies in-between and will not match the characteristics.I don't know these big-five or hexaco tests, but b

If someone is looking for a more detailed set of "labels" then check out Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). Take a test here: http://similarminds.com/personality_tests.html and searching for your "type", judge for yourself if the advice given could advance you.As discussed before on HN, the readership here is skewed towards INTP/INTJ compared to a general population (<a href="http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=16751

Here is some potential to construct a personality meta-test: If you prefer Big 5 to MBTI, you are introverted; if you prefer MBTI to Big 5, you are extraverted. If you prefer either of them to horoscope, you are... blah blah blah... if you think all tests are problematic, you are judging; and if you are afraid you would fail at all of them, you are neurotic.

MBTI results correlate moderately to strongly with Big 5 scores. Is Big 5 equivalent to astrology too?

Hash functions are repeatable. MBTI types are not--people often receive different results when retaking the test, even in short time periods. It categories are not based on research about significant aspects of personality, and often go against it. The Big Five personality test is a scientifically grounded one that actually works as you describe, and with less loss of accuracy.

A data driven exploration of Myers briggs might make a good article.

Meyers-Briggs testing strikes again! /s

There is no question that the MBTI as a whole does not hold up to scientific testing, but individual pieces of it do work. For example, the (E/I) portion of the type indicator is supported by empirical psych studies. Also, just about everyone on Hacker News is an NT, which surely must mean something. (Regardless of what the site you submitted says.)

MBTI highly correlates with OCEAN (aka Big Five), a psychological test (see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myers%E2%80%93Briggs_Type_Indi...). Sure, some parts make no sense (like insisting in binary values, or some of its interpretation). Still, it is not a horoscope.I use it a lot when it comes to introducing people to nerdy friends (especially in t
