I think you're right. I'm not sure why people attach so much ego to the experience though.
I'm sure many people don't do it primarily to feel special. My apologies to those people. However, in my personal experience, the people I know with this mindset are also the people who seem to believe in the concept of "being better than other people" and actively pursue means to this end. It's not getting things done that matters. It's feeling superior to others that matters.
It's not even ego, it's external validation. You're not sure you're doing it right and then someone says you are. Powerful.
