> HBO is hamstrung by its lucrative cable tv deals in the USI'm not sure this is true. HBO Go is available for subscription in the US, is available on many streaming platforms. Additionally, you can subscribe to HBO through Amazon Prime (among other places; I just happen to use the Prime subscription). I can't comment on differences in marketing spend or consumer goodwill, but from my perspective, I see the same level of service between HBO and Netflix (though admittedly, Netflix

I'm currently subscribed to Netflix, HBO GO and Canal+ (French/European premium TV channel), and HBO GO has the best catalog, by far. The problem with Netflix is that there are "Originals", and not much else. While the production quality of these shows is superb, the artistic values are nowhere near what the movies on HBO can offer. Which is a shame, because Netflix pretty much nailed the user experience part.

Why not subscribe to showtime / hbo?

I think House of Cards probably changed the situation somewhat: if Netflix can keep putting out exclusive content of that caliber HBO is going to lose a lot of customers. The week after that show premiered HBO enabled AirPlay on their iPhone app, which by the way is fantastic. I bet they're already prepared to go the Netflix route and are just watching the numbers for the right time to strike.

HBO already started to shift. It's called HBO GO. With an HBO subscription you have online access. The problem with HBO adopting a pure-streaming service is that it's still more lucrative for them to work with the cable providers.

Netflix might become HBO at the cost of being Netflix.

> HBO Go/Now are fine. Not really, they are lousy apps. You can fix that without engaging in the "spew content and see waht sticks" style of netflix.

I think HBO has more to do with this phenomenon than Netflix does.

I wonder if Netflix or HBO can do that? Seems so obvious...

HBO Go requires a cable subscription. That immediately disqualifies it.
