I mean we already built the pyramids...

Yeah, I was all ready to learn about how the ancient Egyptians used stacks to build the pyramids or something.

"significantly worse than the pyramids in every way, 4600 years later" doesn't really inspire confidence.

The particular reference to Egyptians is a red herring, since nobody else built pyramids of this sort (that survive and are known). I expect that if they were located in China or Europe (and no where else), people would equally wonder how the Chinese or Europeans could have been so unique as to build something of the sort.

The question would probably hinge on whether they were given to building cyclopean architecture. If the Egyptians were just content to build mudbrick cities, rather than erecting pyramids, colossal stone statues, stelae, obelisks, and the like, they would be much harder to detect.

The Egyptians built the pyramids without computers or modern construction equipment. Building the Great Pyramid of Giza today would be a massive project even with modern technology. Yet someone figured out not only how to build it, but organize the workers, the logistics, and manage a long term project without much more than a reed and papyrus.

The Egyptians built the pyramids 5000 years ago. What I find incredible is how we can't seem to build things that last anymore.

They're in Egypt, the builders would have been "Ancient Egyptians" regardless of whether that means dynastic Ancient Egyptians or a pre-dynastic "lost civilization". That being said there are a lot of interesting unanswered questions, e.g. why are pyramids newer than the Giza complex less-sophisticated? The fact that we don't know how they are built tells you all of these are still questions completely unanswered by archeology.

Some earlier versions of mankind had great knowledge too and not all of that has been preserved for us. Try to rebuild the Pyramids of Gizeh today for example. Do we today know exactly how this stuff worked?
