I moved here from Europe and I am absolutely shocked at how reckless the drivers are. In the old country I think I saw a car run a red light once in 20 years of driving. Here is seems I see it every other day.

people drive the speed limit here. its a much different driving culture than the mainland and it helps that speeding is aggressively ticketed.

Obviously not true. There are gradations of strictness in driving behavior. Driving in Germany, for example, is a totally totally different experience from anywhere in the US.

I wonder if the harrowing bit isn't a strength.When you're driving in North America, even in a city center, it often feels like there's nothing to do except watch the car in front of you and the next light. I wonder if that makes drivers disengage and not notice dangers.In contrast, things tend to be a lot denser and less regular here. Maybe that keeps peoples' heads on the road.

One thing I noticed while abroad in china, india, and thailand, is that drivers in those countries are much more alert. This could be by necessity because of narrower lanes, or the general amount of chaos on the roads beight higher. In any case the result is that we get lulled into a false sense of security in the US because most people do follow the rules and drive predictably.
