why the downvotes? sorry, i'm only commenting on how society seems to view drug use. this isn't a personal statement of values.
It probably will sound cruel, but this is natural selection at work. We can't babysit adults. If someone wants to smoke or drink alcohol, we accept it, but when someone takes drugs, people start losing their minds, even though alcohol/cigarettes are worse than many recreational drugs. If someone wants to ruin their health, but experience something unusual, let them. The dangers are generally known.
The intent expressed is likely laudable, and the helpful approach overall preferred by the HN crowd -- however, the context, specifically associating drug consumption with addiction might not be popular among people who use psychoactive substances occasionally and no see themselves as addicts.
It really doesn't matter much if you agree or not with the usage, it is a shame people need to go for drugs so often. I can see a reason for a weekly beer or so or even for other party related stuff. But daily usage of any drugs is a way to dope yourself from the world.

As for your friends, you know about the
Not sure what you mean but it seems you agree that drug use doesn't actually say much about a person.

I personally know people who are very active on cannabis and
You assume doing drugs is a sign of a dysfunctional person. While it often is, plenty of people use drugs responsibly, in moderation, because drugs are fun.
Taking hard drugs can lead to deviant behavior, so I am not sure if people should be applauded for it.
