You don't have to move to Asia for a cheap and decent living, you can try a modern city from the Eastern Europe or Portugal, you'll find nice communities, open with the foreigners, interesting projects, volunteering, a social and healthy life.

Never been there, but Panama looks good: cheap cost of living, fast internet, sizeable "knowledge worker" expat community (from cursory googling), good nightlife, etc.

Decent internet that would allow me to stream every so often, reasonable variety of food/things to do, milder weather, LGBT friendliness, and cheapness (in relation to living in, say a large city in the American West coast). Also safety to some extent.I could hop to/explore the EU, where I would feel completely comfortable and I could absolutely do with some minor bureaucratic hassle but I would be concerned about being able to working with a US job if I have that marked a differenc

Supprised no one mentioned Singapore yet. Lived there a couple of years. Huge tech and business scene in Asia, everyone speaks English, they welcome foreign talent, cheaper local food than most of western Europe, average residential Internet connection is about 7 times faster than the US according to speedtest.net, one page easy tax filing (no huge personal tax filing industry like H&R block), and you can rent a room in a shared appartment for around $400 per month. You also dont need a car

I could probably move to Ecuador or Cambodia and retire outright. Trust me, I've been considering it. But there's something about the developed world that I enjoy. When I traveled through Asia, I like Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, South Korea. But Singapore seems to be even more expensive than the US?

Despite beeing more expensive (think double or triple the 500$ figure for a comfortable life, depending on the particular country you choose), south european countries might be a good alternative. You get more stability and much better education and health systems, while keeping the good weather and lower cost of living.

I would think the Philippines would be better due to their relatively generous visa extension policies (you can stay in the Philippines for 1.5 years on just tourist visa extensions if you wanted to) and far less red tape in getting things like SIM cards, renting places and so on. You can also get half decent internet there too, it's tropical and there are beaches everywhere!

The internet. Live somewhere cheap that you enjoy. Southeast Asia and Eastern Europe are favorites.
