Camera Depth Estimation
Discussions center on techniques for computing depth maps and 3D information using standard cameras, including monocular methods, stereo vision, motion parallax, and photogrammetry, often compared to dedicated depth sensors like LiDAR or RealSense.

So I hear, but parent wondered if they used the depth data so I figured I'd mention it. Not saying it doesn't work with a single camera :)
Couldn't you do this with any webcam and CV? I don't see how the depth component makes it any easier.
Yes, the app requires you to move the camera after your initial shot which takes another picture to calculate depth
2 cameras aren't enough for an accurate depth map though, right? I thought you need infrared.
There are several ways to do depth mapping with just a single camera. Structure from Motion, and Multiple View Geometry are a couple. Of course, more sensors will usually provide better data. I imagine there are plenty of situation where this app with behave poorly (e.g. low light, scenes with little texture), they just don't show it in the demo.
Great project! It's really interesting that you relied solely on a regular camera for depth perception. Way less expensive than working with RGBD images.
it says stereo so you need two pictures? I was thinking about the photogramemtry technique, this is great... I mean I wonder how accurate it is(with regard to depth calculation from images on a larger scale like feet) but man impressive
phones with depth camera surely can help.
I think that's more of a ocular SLAM kind of thing for depth mapping
It seems sort of unnecessary to do it from a single image. Just get a little motion of the camera (just a second) and you can get way better estimates for depth.
