Yes, it's very true, my grandfather told me about that.

My father (still alive) has a grandparent born in the 19th century. I should go find out exactly when, thank you.

My grandfather used to say that he was "35 and a few months."

I am so envious of your experience. My grandfather had his own achievements (including saving about 1,000 people from Hitler's concentration camps by arranging for transport out of Germany). But it sounds like your grandfather was much more fun to talk to.

It reminds me of my grandfather (that I barely knew). He was spending a lot of time in the basement where he kept tons of books. He liked to read, paint and build things there. He also had pen pals from other countries. Writing letters was a big thing at that time! There was quite a lot to do in their caves even without the internet.

This was how I felt when my grandfather passed in 2021. He was always my hero since he was first a Holocaust survivor and then was drafted at 16 to go back to Germany on D-day, where he almost drowned (his lander didn’t fully make it to shore and he couldn’t swim), and then was later caught by the Nazis. Just an insane story and connection to that period in time and once it’s gone, it’s gone. This is why i try to encourage everyone to keep chatting with your older folks before their time comes.
