Newsblur has some of this, it shows how popular some feeds are and has a "popular with other users" section.
Interesting concept, but I'd want it personalized to my stream. Filters out a lot of useless content :)
This has probably been said before (and/or above), but perhaps each article should be tagged and users should subscribe to only those tags of interest to them. In addition, a social component to HN would be useful -- for instance, allow me to recommend a story for someone or for stories of interest to my friends to be ranked above the norm. Our friends make great filters!
Hi JoshCole, thanks your feedback. You are thinking along the exact same lines as us. Your suggestion is on our todo list, and the latest post/users are just a filler as we have not gotten around to implement a recommendation system yet.But we plan to utilize a users posts, the people who they are subscribed to, and the posts of the people they are subscribed to in order to serve more relevant content.Again, thanks for the feedback, it really helps.
How about just Hacker News, expanded with some machine learning to determine the topics I would be interested in. My 'friends' or connections don't supply me with nearly enough of the posts and news items that catch my interest, whereas I trust HN to float up things of interest (and not pure trash), so can I just base my feed on your posts?
Maybe you could seed it with some feeds and then it could suggest others that have common topics.
This actually seems useful to me. Seconding the comment that you should make a suggestion list of users to follow. In fact discovering good HN users, might be the core feature.
Very interesting idea... Seems really useful, and you should def extend this to beyond HN! Let people pick their content sources :)
Cool idea! Suggestions:Add Upvote/Downvote buttons, so you can figure out which content a given user enjoys more.Potentially integrate with the 'read later' type of tools.
Is there a "personalized" social news site that shows me stories based on their user-vote correlation to the stories that I vote on?
