Hollywood is floundering because:- there's no secondary market for VHS & DVD anymore. Almost all the money has to be made on opening weekend- in recent years, content has become preachy instead of focusing on being entertainingNetflix & Amazon movies are ultra-low quality; you couldn't pay me to watch it. A quality Hollywood production that was made to entertain instead of persuade can still easily outcompete tech company movies

I don't work in the movie industry, but it seems to me the superhero and fast and furious type movies are designed to appeal to young people in America, China, India and Europe. A movie like that offers an incredibly large potential audience.Three films I watched recently that might have a hard time getting made today are Broken Flowers by Jim Jarmusch starring Bill Murray, After Hours by Martin Scorsese and The Muse by Albert Brooks. I disagree with Paul Graham's notion that we need to find a better way to entertain ourselves. The narratives of films are powerful and are not always fun and entertaining yet people will go watch them; even if they walk out a bit disturbed. Hollywood creates content. I think to beat Hollywood, would require a platform that enables the film production process to happen outside the Hollywood system. Youtube, Netflix already have the distribution end.
