I think the only way really to make it work is by having a private "beta" invites or the placeholder or something so that you can build some excitement and get people signed up. For people to get recommendations of friends, they must have friends using the app, so you have a strong network problem. Facebook solved that restricting the initial users to the students in Harvard. How are you planning to get an initial cluster of users?

If it requires lots of people to work (chicken and egg problem) you need to find a way to get around it. Some common ways that spring to mind are:-Seeding: figure out a way to get data in there before the user experiences it. LinkedIn, Facebook, etc have you import contacts so you can instantly find your friends/colleagues/etc. Reddit used multiple accounts to post links themselves. Create the content or figure out a way to automatically populate when someone registers.-Pre-Launch: Get
