People aren't fungible. Discriminating in favor of some women/minorities doesn't help other other women/minorities elsewhere who have been harmed by discrimination. The goal should be to reduce injustice, not to incur more injustice as a mechanism to achieve parity between arbitrary identity groups.

Because the goal may not be 'fair' for all individuals but instead 'equal' for groups of individuals, especially those who have been traditionally discriminated against.

I think it is because one is a historically disadvantaged minority group and the other is not.

You are making an implicit assumption that groups should be treated equitably. Some of us disagree with that--we feel *individuals* should be treated equitably and see these attempts to treat groups equitably as treating individuals *inequitably*.Why should my chance of getting into college be hampered by where my parents live or what color skin they gave me??Aiding one person is inherently discriminating against another.

In some contexts it is considered a bad look to tell people facing discrimination for their unchosen group membership that people of all groups face the same issue and their concerns about the issue are equally valid.

Discrimination benefiting historically under represented or discriminated against groups.

Only if you're not of the favored ethnic group.

Just assert that it is unfairly harmful to some minority group, problem solved.

jchiu1106 May 26, 2016 View on HN

I said it's unfair to single out and potentially antagonize a group while the problem is more prevalent across many different groups. I don't see any contradiction here. Sorry...

It is not clear to me how this is more detrimental to some groups more than others. Can you elaborate?
