"He seems to have an obsession of breaking free of Apples control" - can you give more context about this? Does he basically think facebook is shackled by iphone app privacy requirements?

I understand why people are upset with Facebook. I find it interesting that same people don't seem to be upset with Apple, while Apple is largely playing the same game.Forget all you know about Facebook ad practices for a second, and take a look at what Apple is doing, but putting "Mom and Pop LLC" in place of Facebook.Apple is using their enormous power to essentially pick and choose what is allowed to execute on your device. Sure, they give user a "choice" to eit

What if this causes apple to pull the facebook app?

Facebook is fighting the good fight for evil reasons. They complain that Apple's restrictions on apps are not applied to their own apps, given them an unfair advantage and also preventing people from developing real QoL improving apps for iPhones. That sounds reasonable. But then the stated reason is that Facebook wants to be able to better track what people are doing with their phones, so now I want both sides to lose.

This is Apple blocking an app for critizing Apple. Facebook doesn't block posts that criticize Facebook.

amelius Feb 22, 2019 View on HN

Shouldn't Apple simply block the Facebook app from the App Store then? And similarly for all apps that pass data to Facebook?

paulmd Feb 26, 2021 View on HN

If Facebook exploits its software ecosystem to try and unmask users I think you'll see Apple pull the plug on any apps using those SDKs (including facebook itself) if necessary.

by purchasing the new iphone, and calling on apple to not allow third party stores, because they know they cannot say no to installing facebook, and IF thirdparty stores or sideloading were to be allowed, facebook might just get worse!(all this seen in comments in other threads on hn)

>Zuckerberg also criticized a change in Apple’s upcoming iOS 14 operating system for iPhones and iPads that would make it much harder for companies like Facebook to target people using those devices with ads. Zuckerberg estimated that Facebook’s ad targeting on iPhones and iPads would lose about 50% of its effectiveness once iOS 14 was released and suggested that if Facebook could distribute its apps outside the App Store, it could avoid that kind of scenario. It's scenarios lik
