As others pointed out, you use EBS then.
on EBS, not on S3. EBS has much lower durability guarantees

Just don't use EBS. Most everything else is pretty stable.
EBS disks are far more durable (and convenient with S3 snapshots).
I'm sorry, I don't have experience with the Amazon cloud, I don't know what EBS is :)
ELBs unfortunately use EBS so they are always affected in these cases.
Why not just EBS at that point?
Sorry, the storage is EBS, the line in the docs is just misleading. We'll push a fix to the docs in a few mins.
