Swears are fine and good, slurs not so much.
They don't like swear words.
I object to swearing. I believe it's a very inefficient way to convey meaning, especially in a technical context, where it may make it actually harder to follow the line of thought. In addition, in some contexts (e.g. socially conservative environments), it could potentially be offensive to some people, and I generally think it's not worth to offend people unless there is a reason for it. It may be argued that some swear words are particularly good at transferring connotative meaning,
That would be true if the words "fuck" and "shit" were not considered swear words :).See also: https://hn.algolia.com/?query=fuck&sort=byPopularity&prefix=....
For fuck's sake, if you need to be swearing (and I don't think it's necessary at all), just use the actual words.
There's lots of ways to use language expressively without swearing.
So youβre not allowed use swear words?
Am I the only one that thinks using profanity is a lousy way to explain things?
Thank you. If you want to curse, just curse. I've seen "fuck" on HN dozens of times, and worse too. If you've got some hang up about maintaining the pseudo-professional/intellectual air of HN, just use a different word/phrase altogether.
what's up with all the swearing? this trend of swearing as linkbait is getting pretty lame.
