Here’s why I’m okay with it: China doesn’t allow American social media either
China allows social media that complies with Chinese law. Google, Facebook, Twitter, etc exited China because they were being heavily criticized in the US for supporting the Great Firewall. It was closer to a US export ban than a Chinese import ban.
The Chinese government censors posts on social media. It’s nefarious by design. Nothing like that happens with FAANG.
Of course but in China you'll never see the (almost mandatory) "we're just as bad, if not worse" comment whenever an issue of national security comes up.I also note that China blocks all foreign social media from their markets whilst running some of the most invasive apps (e.g TikTok) in ours. Please enjoy your freedom to advocate on behalf of a foreign govt on a US based forum, a freedom not available to the good citizens of China.
i would recommend reading on censorship inside china https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Censorship_in_Chinathey literally block any discussion on things like... you know, democracy movements.
China banned almost all US social networks, this is fair play
I dont have any friends who are pro china on Facebook so I cant prove/disprove but I see plenty of pro china content on hacker news. None of it is being actively scrubbed by the US Government. This is the big difference between operating in China vs United States.
China is not protecting laws with their firewall, what are you saying?
China has banned nearly all US social networks already so is this really surprising given the current status quo?
This sounds horrible. I always hear how Chinese internet access is under too heavy regulation, isn't there any penalty for such behavior?
