I'm a Unix admin. I've used Linux for over 15 years ever since the age of 13, where a dutch hacker gave me a box debian. Kernel 2x was my first setup.Icepack Linux was my first Linux OS:https://distrowatch.com/table-mobile.php?distribution=icepac...Where Matrox S3 drivers were something you needed to modify yourself and Xorg was XFree86.If I was to gloat;
I remember using this as well for my first foray into linux. Don't remember any details, beyond what you said though.
Yes, it was an amazing time. I started with the Yggdrasil distributionhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yggdrasil_Linux/GNU/Xwhich ran (I think) pretty happily on a Dell Dimension 486DX2 with a fairly small drive, 300 MB or so.Even then, with getting X running being kinda tricky, Linux was a big step up from Windows 3.1 and all the contortions you had to do to free up base RAM whilst stuck in the crappy memory mo
This was actually my first experience with Linux about 13 years ago. I couldn't get the popular distros at the time to run on my machine and decided to try this. I never did get it working but I imagine the process has improved in the decade+.
Same here, around 8-9 years ago... on a laptop. Things would break all the time for me and it was hard to even use any vanilla kernels on it. It taught me most of my basic linux skills, and the forums were a treasure of information (before they took a dive, not sure how they are nowadays). I often had to boot Knoppix (livecd) to fix things.It was a distro that invited a lot of experimenting and tweaking.I've been running opensuse as my main distro now for a couple years. Great kde support,
Lindows was my first Linux distro c. 1999. It was my first year at college, majoring in Business Administration, living on campus with internet speeds above 56kbps for the first time. Trawling through the internet at that time, I stumbled on a (likely bootleg) Lindows installer somewhere and fell down the rabbit hole.Looking back, I realize now Iβd been a self-denying computer geek before then but for whatever reason Lindows, itβs wacky installer, dual boot support, and fortunate hardware com
My first introduction to self installable Linux OS was with SUSE Linux. I still remember my summer break of 2001 when I spent most of the time installing and configuring SUSE Linux on my laptop. At the time, finding certain drives/applications to run few things were really hard compared to Windows but man that was fun. I remember being able to install sound driver and do some cool things. Nowadays, everything is pre-packaged and no fun :)
This was the first Linux I ever used.
I'm 41, and have been using it for over 2 decades.It's always been a hobby. I work in a non-tech field, I have just liked it better than alternatives, and like the tinkering bit.It started about 1993, as a freshman at Bronx Science. The school's internet terminals ran AIX (IBM X Stations with these nice big 21" CRTs). Senior year, a friend gave me a CD from Walnut Creek. That was Slackware. Started playing with it, and liked it. I was using a custom built 486 I bought
This was my first linux distro, I used it back in the mid 90's and it was such a great learning experience. Amazing how long it's been already.
