Grab a Synology NAS and run their Synology Photos software? It has almost all the features of Google Photos, self hosted and very little maintenance.
It would be nice to have some kind of Google-Photos-alike without the Google part. E.g. I can host on my own NAS.
I'm using Synology Photos, have no complaints. Its really a good starter when decoupling from google photos, removing all subscription and taking control of my own data with expandable raid storage
Google photos is better for that.
Sounds like you should just use Google Photos as it delivers most of that, with perhaps some improvements in 'backing up' outside of GP.
Try it. Adopt it. :)Just a few weeks ago, facial recognition was added and that was it for me. I finally made the switch from Google Photos and iCloud to immich. It's your self-hosted google photos alternative, with image recognition, a map, sharing folders publicly, or with other users on your server. Some parts will be buggy though, like face detection, or memories. But the whole "backup & sync" part is very reliable, I've never had any issues.
You're not just using Google for backups? (I admit I don't take huge amounts of photos but that's where mine are)
You can do that with Immich or OneDrive, your photos don't have to be public
PhotoprisimCheck it out, I've been very happy with that instead of Google photos.
For backing up photos I highly recommend immich. It is a self hosted google photos replacement under active developement.https://github.com/immich-app/immich
