I understand that Netflix blocks some content from non-US customers, but what CA and UK content is blocked from US customers?

daveheq Mar 25, 2019 View on HN

I've been blocked from shows "not available in the US", so it's not just a European issue. It's just a copyright thing.

Tons of Netflix content available in the US but not outside, for example.

Netflix? Hahaha, good luck with that anywhere outside Canada, USA or UK. Amazon? The same. No need to describe the rest of them. Same story everywhere. Other countries are just not on their globe.

Geographical restrictions are the worst. They want more money and advertisers aren't paying international broadcast rates. have you tried one of those browser add on vpn tunnels. theyre often dodgy as fuck but get the job done.

Outside of places like the us? Crappy streaming for starters.

You know Netflix isn't available in all countries?

whitexn--g28h Jul 13, 2020 View on HN

They said before Netflix was available in their country. There were / are many countries where it is impossible to legally watch US cable television. I cannot hold someone at fault for wanting to view creative works that are blocked just because of where they live.

Netflix gives access to content based on the country you (or rather your IP) are physically present in.

This is the case for most streaming services. Pretty much the only one I've found that works without hacks is Netflix, although their content varies quite a bit from one country to another.I understand this is due to licensing restrictions but it's pretty annoying all the same. I'd happily pay for Filmstruck, for example, if they'd only let me.
