AI Stock Photography

Discussions center on the high costs of traditional stock photo sites like Getty and Shutterstock, the disruption by cheap AI-generated images from tools like DALL-E or Flux, and business models for new image services including pricing, free alternatives like Unsplash, and APIs.

Thank you for the feedback. The choice for stock-photos is one of budget. I'm currently bootstrapping myself and thought this was a good tradeoff.

I fully expect stock image sites to be swamped by DALL-E generated images that match popular terms (e.g. "business person shaking hands"). Generate the image for $0.15. Sell it for $1.00.

Sounds like you could save yourself some time and budget by offering to pay for those images your are using?

Are there any products available for casual users, just paying for a few images?

zirgs Jun 6, 2023 View on HN

They can already replace stock image sites. Why pay getty/shutterstock an obscene amount of money for a photo if you can simply generate something similar with a prompt for free?I checked how much some images cost on getty images - and their prices are ridiculous - 100-1000eur or more. No wonder they are trying to sue stability.ai now.

Amazing, a free service needs to sell your photos in order to make money in order to keep providing you a free service.

The idea is good but the fact it's a commercial project (charging 99$ for an image at that) is quite debious.

How about a service where you can pay people to do it for you, maybe, say, 10 cents an image?

antonwinter Jul 9, 2014 View on HN

i already follow the places that you get these photos from ( unsplash and the others you have listed on your site ). Of course they provide them absolutely free without any restrictions. It would be cool if you can add more value as the middleman to compel me to subscribe. not sure what that might be of course seeing as the images are essentially already curated by others on their sites.Perhaps some original content as well would make a difference.

Your assumption that these photos can not be sold is simply false. Maybe you specifically won't pay but i would. I pay for premium services when i need graphics. Think of an instagram api you can get access to and showcase pictures with tags x,y that are popular within your service.
